Every child deserves the best possible start in life and support to their full potential. A child’s experience in the early years has a major impact on their future life chances. A secure safe and happy childhood is important in its’ own right, and it provides the foundation for children to make the most of their abilities and talents as they grow up.

We believe that all parents have an important role to play in the education of their child. We therefore recognise the role that parents have played, and their future role, in educating the children.

The EYFS is made up of six areas of learning:

• Personal, Social and Emotional Development
• Communication, Language and Literacy
• Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
• Knowledge and Understanding of the World
• Physical Development
• Creative Development

None of these areas can be delivered in isolation from the others. They are equally important and depend on each other. All areas are delivered through a balance of adult led and child initiated activities.

Play is at the core of the Foundation Stage at Our Lady and Saint Peter RC Primary School. Children’s play reflects their wide ranging and varied interests and preoccupations. In their play children learn at their highest level and play with peers is important for children’s development.

Children need to experience play physically and emotionally and in their play use the experiences they have and extend them to build up ideas, concepts and skills.

While playing children can express fears and re-live anxious experiences. They can try things out, solve problems and be creative and can take risks and use trial and error to find things out.

By watching and interacting with children’s play, we make observations and assessments of each child’s achievements, interests and learning styles;

We then use these observations and assessments to identify learning priorities and plan relevant and motivating learning experiences for each child.
